报告摘要

Collisions of photons and electrons with atoms, nuclei, and elementary particles is our main tool to explore their structure and dynamics. In almost all situations, the probe photons and electrons are described as plane waves. However, experimenters can now prepare photons and electrons as vortex states, that is, freely propagating wave packets with helical wave fronts. A vortex photon or electron, in addition to its spin, carries a nonzero orbital angular momentum (OAM) projection on its propagation direction. This is a totally new quantum number, which has never been exploited in experimental subatomic physics. Making full use of the initial-state OAM may lead to revolutions in electron microscopy, experimental nuclear and hadronic physics. In this lecture, I will give an overview of the main ideas in vortex state scattering, review the experimental progress, and illustrate the promises of vortex states in nuclear and particle physics with several recent proposals. Research opportunities at SYSU within this interdisciplinary topic will also be outlined.
